PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY
  • This portion of K 02708+ is abraded so that a reading is difficult.
  • While we follow If a City 2 (193, 32.56’, A ii) in emending KI to form KI.TA ‘below’, the traces of the sign after <KI>.TA do not fit with If a City 2's reading -nu. Collation of K 02708+ ii 7’ shows the heads of three diagonal wedges. We therefore read ˹KUR˺. The reading -nu in If a City 2 appears to have based on 32.A.58 and 32.S.75, whose protases are very similar to the above omen:

32.A.58
If a lizard gives birth under the millstone
DIŠ EME.DIR KI.TA-nu na4UR5 Ù.TU

32.S.75
[If a lizar]d gives birth u[n]der the millstone
[DIŠ EME.ŠI]D ina K[I].TA-nu na4UR5.UR5 Ù.TU

The traces on K 02708+, however, simply do not allow for the reading -nu.

Further, in a comment on 32.A.58, If a City 2 (182, n. 119’) states that the 32.N.56' has the signs ŠU LUGAL (see also next comment). This simply does not reflect the state of the manuscript.

  • The reading in If a City 2 also omits the traces of a sign on the right-hand break, after BI. The traces reveal three closely-spaced, diagonal wedges. We suggest a possible reading of DÙG to form DÙG.GA ‘to be happy’. Meanwhile If a City 2 (170, 32.56') uses 32.S.75 to reconstruct the above omen’s apodosis.
