PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY
  • For the reading ˹lu˺ [m]e-se-ru ˹lu˺ ˹KI˺.ŠÚ in line VAT 10167 r. 35’, see the collation notes in KAL 1 (143, Nr. 16 Rs. 35’).
  • If a City 2 (196, *32.33’ C35’) reads VAT 10167 r. 35’ as follows:

[… .ME]Š ana UGU GIR3 NA ZAG ŠUB.M[EŠ- …] GUR-ru-šu2 […].ŠU2 dan-nu DIB-su

The verb ŠUB.MEŠ ‘to fall’ and the adjective kit-pu-lu-ma indicate a plural subject. Nevertheless we do not read MEŠ as the first sign of VAT 10167 r. 35’ as in If a City 2. The photograph shows a parts of the top of a vertical wedge. Though extremely fragmentary, the traces fit better with the reading MIN as is read by KAL 1 (16-17, Rs. 35’ A35’). For the plural of EME.DIR, without MEŠ, see the commentary at 32.A.53. Further the previous seven lines on the same manuscript have all read DIŠ EME.DIR MIN, not DIŠ EME.DIR.MEŠ.

If a City 2 will continue to reconstruct EME.DIR.MEŠ from this omen through 32.A.128’.

  • In VAT 10167 r. 35', the sign MI]N is further to the right than it is in the protases of previous omens in this series. As noted in KAL 1 (75, n. Rs. 35’), it is possible that more than just DIŠ EME.DIR could be reconstructed in the break.
  • See also 32.A.18 and 32.S.14 for omens in which a single lizard falls onto a man’s right foot.
