PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY

It is possible that the sign following the Glossenkeil should be interpreted as the beginning of ŠUB, and that the rest of the apodosis should be reconstructed as Š[UB-e] É 'aban[donment] of the house'. An argument in favour of this reading is that in most omens in chapter 38 in which the apodosis ends with É, it is preceded by either ŠUB-e (38.36', 38.39', 38.41', 38.48', 38.68') or BIR-aḫ (38.56', 38.58'-59').
