[If a liz]ard falls onto the bed of [a sick man], that sick man's illness will fall away.
PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY
  • See also the commentary at 32.A.33 for the reconstruction of the above protasis as well as the interpretation and translation of maqātu in the context of illness. The commentary there also adresses the problems with translating ŠUB-ut as ‘fall (away)’ as was done in If a City 2 (185, 32.33). The Assur omen omits GIG BI ‘that sick (man)’ from its apodosis, but it otherwise duplicates the above.
  • The above omen and 32.S.34 are thematic variants with antithetical protases. See the latter’s commentary for a discussion of similar omens in the medical-diagnostic series SA.GIG.
  • The commentary at 32.N.11 lists the lizard omens touching on the topic of illness.
