PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY
  • The above omen is related to 32.N.49’ and 32.A.56. Each, however, feature complex protases in which a lizard falls into either beer or water within the same omen. While all three omens include ZI in the apodosis, the above omen uses a different translation of the sign. For discussions on the polyvalent sign ZI, see the commentary at both 32.N.49’ and 32.A.38.
  • The thematic of lizards falling into water or beer (vessels) is common among the lizard omens. The commentary at 32.N.49’ includes a list. Note the sequence on VAT 9906 (with a lizard falling first into a beer jug and then a water jug) transposes the sequence of the same protases found in the Sultantepe recension (32.S.46 and 32.S.47).
