  • If a lizard falls onto a torch and is singed- that house will go to ruin.
  • If a City2, 181, *32.98'
If a lizard falls onto a lamp and shrivels, that house will go to ruin.
PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY
  • The corresponding omen in the Sultantepe recension appears to be 32.S.39. Note the syllabic spelling of arbūta there.
  • The verb kupputu is tentatively translated by the CAD K (552–53 s.v. kupputu A) to mean ‘to compress’ in Akkadian. In the context of the above omen, the CAD translates the verb as ‘contracts’. The AHw I, 443 s.v. kapātu(m) 4d translates the verb, in the context of lizards, as “ist zusammengerollt”, with the above omen as its only attestation. It has been translated above as ‘singed’ as the verb is obviously referring to what happens to a lizard when it is burning. The translation in If a City 2 (181, *32.98’) ‘shrivels’ seems plausible as well. The edition KAL 1 (16-17, 72 Vs. 37) translates ‘versengt’.
  • See also the omen on line VAT 9906 ii 5 (in the Assur recension) as it has the same apodosis as above but a different protasis.
