PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY

This omen is quoted by the colophon of A 441+, which is the main manuscript of chapter 37 (ants). The protasis also occurs on all three catalogues of Šumma ālu: see If A City 1, 323 (Assur Catalogue, VAT 9775 iii 6 with the otherwise unattested writing UR.MEŠ) and 324 (Nineveh Catalogue, K 04094b 10). See also If A City 2, 274, n. 1 and Heeßel 2001-2002, p. 235 (BM 68437 2').

The transliteration and translation of UR.ME as sāmānū and 'blister beetles' respectively is based on a thorough new study of the lexical and other attestations of this insect. See Simons forthcoming.
