PHILOLOGICAL COMMENTARY
  • The omen 32.S.31 has been used to reconstruct the above apodosis. The two preserve the same omen, but the Sultantepe omen writes NÀ-iṣ instead of ir-bi-iṣ ‘lies down’. See also 32.N.39’. Although the Nineveh omen is fragmentary, its protasis appears to be the same as above.
  • As KAL 1 (74 n. Vs. 32) notes, the sign ŠÀ has four vertical wedges where only three are expected. This appears to be a particularity in some Assur manuscripts. See, for example, 32.A.58 on the same manuscript. In the same note KAL 1 directs the reader to two further examples on manuscripts edited in KAL 1. The second manuscript, VAT 10481+ collects snake omens from Šumma ālu.
